Cranes for Mining Operations: What Changes Below Surface

A crane that works well on a plant floor can be the wrong machine entirely once it goes underground. The load has not changed. The constraints around it have.

Headroom, ventilation, floor conditions, and how the machine gets to the working face all become limiting factors before capacity does. That is why operations choosing lifting equipment for underground work tend to start from the wrong question. The useful question is not how much the crane can lift. It is what will fit, what can breathe, and what can get there.

Headroom decides the shortlist before capacity does

On surface, you size a crane to the load. Underground, you size it to the drift.

Backs in a haulage drift or a production level are finite, and services run below them. Ventilation ducting, water lines, power cable, and communications all take clearance off the top before the machine gets any. What is left is the working envelope, and it is usually less than the surveyed dimension suggests.

A carry deck crane suits this because it is built low. The boom stows along the deck rather than standing over the cab, so the travelling height is close to the machine height. Broderson models carry a 360° rotating boom over a flat load deck, which means the crane can pick a load, carry it, and set it without a second machine or a separate transport.

The practical measurement to take is not the height of the back.

It is the lowest point along the entire route the machine will travel, including any point where it has to turn.

Ventilation is a bigger constraint than most people expect

An engine underground is competing with the ventilation system, and the ventilation system was designed around a planned equipment fleet. Adding a machine changes that calculation.

This is where fuel type stops being a preference and becomes a design input. LPG burns cleaner than diesel, which is why Broderson offers LPG configurations and why they are commonly specified for confined and underground work. We carry LPG-configured Broderson units in Ontario, so this is an available option rather than a special order with a lead time attached.

Whether an LPG machine suits your operation still depends on your ventilation capacity, your air quality monitoring, and what your ventilation engineer says about adding the unit to the circuit. Ask the supplier for the engine specification and emissions data early. If the answer takes several days, that tells you something about how often they are asked.

Floor loading and ground conditions

Underground floors are not engineered slabs. They are muck, backfill, shotcrete, or rock, and they vary along the drift.

Two numbers matter. The first is the machine weight, spread across its tyres. The second is the point load under the outriggers when the crane sets up to lift, which concentrates far more weight onto a much smaller area.

A machine that trams safely along a drift can still punch through where it sets up, particularly near a stope edge, over backfill, or on a recently mucked floor. Cribbing and pads are not optional extras. They are part of the lift plan, and the pad size follows from the outrigger load, not from what happens to be on the truck.

If you do not have the outrigger point loads for the machine you are considering, ask. A supplier who works in mining will have them.

Getting the machine to the working face

A crane is only useful where it can reach. The route to the working face imposes constraints that never appear on a spec sheet.

  • Ramp gradient, and whether the machine can climb it loaded as well as empty
  • Turning radius at intersections and switchbacks, which is usually tighter than the straight drift
  • Cage or shaft dimensions if the machine has to be lowered rather than driven
  • Whether the unit can be broken down for transport and reassembled below, and how long that takes

A compact machine that fits the shaft is worth more than a larger one that has to be dismantled, even where the larger machine has the capacity you would prefer.

Surface work has its own constraints

Not all mining lifting happens below ground, and the surface side is often where the heaviest work sits. Headframes, hoist rooms, mill and crusher maintenance, conveyor drives, and shop work all need lifting capacity, usually in buildings that were laid out decades ago around different equipment.

Here the governing factors look more like plant work than mining. Door and overhead clearance, floor loading in an older building, and whether the load has to travel any distance once it is picked. A carry deck crane covers a lot of this because it lifts and carries in one operation, which matters when the mill is down and the window is fixed.

Northern Ontario adds one more: temperature. Cold starting, hydraulic performance and battery condition are real considerations from November onward, and they belong in the conversation before the machine is dispatched rather than after it arrives.

Plan the service call before you need it

Ask what happens when the machine goes down at the face.

On surface this is an inconvenience. Underground it can block a drift, halt production on that level, and turn a repair into a scheduling problem across the whole shift. The answer should exist before the crane goes down, not after it stops.

That makes parts availability and service response a genuine specification item rather than an afterthought. Practical questions to put to any supplier:

  • How quickly can a technician attend, and can they work underground
  • Are common wear parts held locally or shipped from elsewhere
  • Is the supplier the OEM, an authorised dealer, or neither

The last one matters more than it sounds. A dealer with OEM parts access resolves a fault in a different timeframe to one sourcing components on the open market.

Working through the decision

The sequence that avoids expensive surprises runs roughly in this order.

  1. Measure the route, not the destination.Lowest clearance along the entire path, tightest turn, steepest gradient.
  2. Talk to your ventilation engineer before you shortlist.Fuel type and engine rating constrain the shortlist more than capacity does.
  3. Establish ground conditions where the crane will set up.Then get the outrigger point loads and size the cribbing to match.
  4. Confirm the load properly.Weight, dimensions, lift radius and whether the pick is on outriggers or on rubber. Capacity varies substantially between those two.
  5. Agree the service arrangement.Before the machine goes underground, not after it stops.
